Italian industrial output falls in December as manufacturing slump shows signs of easing

Italy's industrial output fell 0.4 percent in December but rose 0.9 percent in the fourth quarter. Data suggests the long manufacturing slump is now easing.

ISTAT reported on Wednesday that industrial output in Italy ITIT fell 0.4% on a month-on-month basis in December. Despite this monthly dip, the data showed a 3.2% increase compared to the same month the previous year and a 0.9% rise across the fourth quarter. As the latest monthly and quarterly official industrial output data for the European Union's third-largest economy, the report is being closely analyzed for signs that a long-standing manufacturing downturn is losing its grip.
