IR announced on February 17, 2026, that parts of the Strait of Hormuz will close for a few hours to accommodate military drills conducted by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to a report from the Fars news agency, the planned maneuvers affect the world's most vital oil export route. The announcement has raised immediate concerns as the partial closure is described as risking the interruption of up to a fifth of global oil flows, a scale that could influence crude prices and heighten regional military tensions.
