Indian Markets Rebound While Middle East War Caps Gains
Indian indexes rose on Monday as financials gained. However, high oil prices and Middle East tensions capped the rebound following recent heavy losses.
Indian benchmark indexes showed signs of recovery on Monday morning following their most significant weekly decline in years. However, the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and elevated energy prices continued to limit broader market gains. The Nifty 50 index edged up 0.2% to 23,189, while the BSE Sensex rose 0.18% to 74,697.6 as of 10:08 a.m. IST.
The market's cautious optimism is tempered by the conflict involving Israel and Iran, which has resulted in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This critical maritime route is essential for global energy supplies, pushing Brent Crude Oil to hover around $104 per barrel. In the United States, President Donald Trump has called for international cooperation to secure the shipping lane.
