Indian Rupee Tests 91 Mark Under Global Market Pressure

The rupee is set to test 91 per dollar today amid weak risk appetite and equity losses. The central bank remains active to limit the currency's depreciation.

The currency market in India is bracing for a volatile session as the U.S. Dollar / Indian Rupee pair approaches the critical 91 threshold. On Friday, the one-month non-deliverable forward indicated an opening range between 90.98 and 91.02, following a settlement of 90.9050 on Thursday. This movement reflects sustained pressure from dollar demand linked to non-deliverable forward (NDF) maturities and routine corporate requirements.

Market participants note that the rupee's weakness is exacerbated by a cautious near-term outlook, prompting importers to increase their hedges. Furthermore, a downturn in domestic equity markets has added to the strain. Analysts suggest that without active intervention from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the currency might have already breached the 91 mark decisively. The inability of the rupee to capitalize on rallies seen in other Asian currencies underscores a persistent underlying weakness in the local unit.

The dollar/rupees repeated moves toward the 91 figure have the impact of keeping dollar long positions interested, more so since there are no major dips when RBI intervenes.

A currency trader at a bank observed that the central bank’s current strategy involves offering dollars at various levels to cap the upside rather than aggressively pushing the pair lower. This approach allows existing long-dollar positions to remain largely unaffected while the rupee continues to face headwinds from broader market trends.

Global sentiment remains fragile, particularly in the United States, where overnight losses in equities and negative futures signals have dampened risk appetite across Asia. Concerns regarding overstretched valuations in the technology sector and ongoing tensions in the Middle East have kept oil markets volatile, further weighing on Asian foreign exchange markets. Despite better-than-expected jobless claims data in the American market, safe-haven demand for Treasuries has kept yields lower, underscoring the prevailing risk-aversion.
