India Panel Calls for Mandatory Gig Worker Registration
An Indian panel recommended mandatory registration of gig workers on a national database. It urged platforms to provide social security and insurance benefits.
An Indian parliamentary panel has recommended mandatory registration for gig workers on a national labor database, calling for clearer legal obligations for digital platforms to contribute to social security. The Standing Committee on Labour noted in a report on Tuesday that gig workers on digital platforms have become an integral part of the modern supply chain in India, particularly in cities delivering food, transport, and other on-demand services. To bridge existing gaps in the social safety net, the committee recommended that all platform aggregators, including Swiggy Limited, Ola Electric Mobility Limited, and ZOMATO LTD, must register gig workers on the government’s e-Shram portal. This portal serves as a national database for unorganized workers.
Engagement of such workers should be linked to this registration.
