India rules out sugar export curbs and maintains duties
Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said today that lower domestic demand is offsetting reduced sugar output. The government also maintained current import duties.
India has officially ruled out imposing new restrictions on the export of Sugar and will maintain existing import duties on edible oils, according to Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra. Speaking on Tuesday, Chopra explained that a decline in domestic consumption has helped to balance the market despite production levels falling below initial expectations. While the government had previously authorized exports of 1.59 million metric tons based on surplus estimates, cane yields in the key producing states of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have been lower than anticipated. Chopra clarified that there are no current plans to curb exports to prioritize ethanol production or to respond to global energy market volatility.
There is no such proposal.
