The International Monetary Fund said on Thursday that discussions with Zambia over a new support programme had advanced and that negotiations were expected to continue after August's general elections following a staff visit that ended May 13. Zambia's primary surplus is projected to fall to 1.1% of gross domestic product this year, down from 3.8% during the final review of its previous support programme. The authorities reaffirmed their commitment to sound macroeconomic policies and fiscal consolidation while protecting priority social spending.
