IMF downgrades UK economic growth forecast for 2026
The IMF cut Britain's 2026 growth forecast to 0.8%, the largest downgrade in the G7. High energy costs from the Iran war are driving this economic slowdown.
The United Kingdom has experienced the most severe economic growth downgrade among major advanced economies, according to the latest report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This revision highlights the country's significant exposure to the inflationary shocks caused by the conflict involving Iran. The IMF now expects the British economy to expand by just 0.8% in 2026, a sharp reduction from its previous forecast of 1.3%. This adjustment represents the largest cut for any Group of Seven (G7) member, leaving the nation tied with Germany and trailing France. On a per capita basis, the British economy is projected to perform at the bottom of the G7.
