Imec has officially opened NanoIC, a 2.5 billion euro pilot line in Belgium
BE dedicated to the development of ultra-advanced semiconductors. Established under the framework of the EU Chips Act, the facility is a key part of the European Union strategy to address a structural shortfall in the production and design of the most advanced chips. The opening of the pilot line marks a significant step toward the goal of boosting regional semiconductor capacity by 2030.
The 2.5 billion euro project is financed through a combination of public and private contributions, including 1.4 billion euros in public funding from the Chips Joint Undertaking and the Flemish government. Private contributions account for the remaining 1.1 billion euros. NanoIC operates on a shared research model designed to allow firms and research laboratories to prototype beyond-2nm process steps and integration. This model enables participants to de-risk their technological advancements before making significant commitments to commercial volume manufacturing.
