Hungary and Ukraine Agree on Minority Rights for EU Talks
Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced a breakthrough regarding the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine. The deal restores native language use in schools and allows the opening of Ukraine's first EU negotiating cluster.
Prime Minister Peter Magyar and Ukraine reached an agreement on the rights of the 100,000-strong Hungarian minority in Ukraine on Wednesday. The deal resolves a long-standing dispute over language and educational protections that had previously stalled Ukraine's progress toward European Union membership. This breakthrough allows Hungary to support opening the first cluster of negotiating chapters in Ukraine's EU accession process.
Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced the agreement during an official trip to Paris. Ukraine agreed to restore a minority school system where children use their native language in all settings. Students may also use Hungarian national symbols and take exams in their native tongue.
