Heavy rainfall reduces India sugar output and limits exports

India sugar output is falling below forecasts as heavy rain damages crops. This slump will likely cap exports and support global sugar prices this season.

Excessive rainfall across major cane-producing states in India ININ has significantly reduced cane yields, prompting several trade houses to lower their estimates for the country’s 2025/26 sugar output. This downward revision is expected to constrain exportable volumes and likely support both domestic and global sugar prices. The situation is particularly significant as India is the world’s second-largest sugar producer, and the reduction in supply comes just as the Indian government has decided to raise the export quota to 2 million tonnes for the year.
