Gulf States Warn US Iran Diplomacy Risks Regional Security
Gulf nations warn that US Iran talks focus on the Strait of Hormuz while ignoring missile threats. This shift risks entrenching Tehran's regional leverage.
Gulf nations are expressing deep concern that ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran may prioritize the security of global energy shipping through the Strait of Hormuz over the broader regional security threats they regard as vital. Officials and analysts expect the next round of negotiations, scheduled to take place in Pakistan, will focus increasingly on uranium enrichment limits and Tehran’s leverage over the world’s most critical oil shipping route rather than the dismantling of missile programs or regional proxies.
The Strait of Hormuz facilitates the transport of approximately one-fifth of the global supply of Brent Crude Oil, making it a central piece of geopolitical leverage. Former President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev recently highlighted this shift, suggesting that Iran’s control over the waterway serves as a potent deterrent equivalent to a strategic weapon.
