Guinea-Bissau Transporters Strike Over Fuel Price Hikes
Drivers in Guinea-Bissau began a strike today after the government raised fuel prices while banning fare increases. The move follows weeks of fuel shortages.
Transport drivers across Guinea-Bissau initiated a strike on Tuesday in several regions, including the capital, after the government implemented significant fuel price hikes while banning increases in passenger fares. The industrial action left many commuters stranded in the capital of Bissau, as well as in Gabu and Mansoa, forcing many to travel long distances on foot.
The decision to raise fuel costs comes as a response to global energy market volatility. The ongoing conflict involving Iran has caused a sharp rise in international prices for commodities such as Brent Crude Oil, creating inflationary pressure across the African continent.
