GREnergy Minister stavros papastavrou announced on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, that the government will hire an external adviser to review the costs of the Great Sea Interconnector. Speaking during an interview with Greek Open television, stavros papastavrou stated that the initiative is intended to provide necessary cost clarifications to attract new investors from the Middle East or the Americas. The project, which consists of a 1,000 megawatt capacity undersea power cable, is designed to link mainland Europe to Cyprus
CY.
The Great Sea Interconnector carries a total budget of €1.9 billion, or approximately $2.26 billion, and is partially funded by the European Union. Despite its strategic importance, the project has been delayed for about a decade due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the eastern Mediterranean. Management of the project shifted in late 2023 when the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO/ADMIE) took over from a Cyprus-based operator that had been developing the link for the previous ten years.
