Gold trades at discounts in India while China sees robust demand ahead of Lunar New Year

Indian bullion dealers offered discounts this week as price volatility kept retail buyers away. Meanwhile, China sees steady demand before the Lunar New Year.

Gold prices in India ININ began trading at discounts this week for the first time in nearly a month as volatile prices deterred buying across the country. In response to the sluggish market conditions, Indian bullion dealers have cut premiums, yet both these dealers and Indian jewellers have largely stayed away from purchases. This caution reflects a broader trend of weaker retail and bullion demand in the domestic market as participants wait for more stable pricing signals.
A key factor contributing to the current market pause is the anticipation of a roughly 80 metric ton government allocation of concessional-duty imports. These shipments are expected to arrive from the United Arab Emirates AEAE under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The Indian government is overseeing this allocation, and market players are positioning themselves ahead of the arrival of this significant volume of lower-duty bullion.
