The global aviation sector is facing significant financial pressure as jet fuel prices have surged following the conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran. Operating costs have been upended by fuel prices jumping from a range of $85 to $90 per barrel to between $150 and $200 per barrel in recent weeks. With fuel representing nearly a quarter of airline operating expenses, carriers are implementing fare hikes, surcharges, and capacity cuts to protect their margins. This volatility is closely tied to the broader energy market, including fluctuations in Brent Crude Oil and West Texas Oil.

In North America, major carriers are passing costs to consumers through increased fees. DELTA AIR LINES INC has reduced its capacity by 3.5 percentage points and raised checked bag fees, while warning that profits may fall below previous expectations. UNITED AIRLINES HOLDINGS INC is cutting unprofitable routes and increasing baggage fees for travel across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Similarly, AMERICAN AIRLINES GROUP INC and SOUTHWEST AIRLINES CO have implemented $10 increases for checked luggage, with American also trimming economy passenger benefits. ALASKA AIR GROUP INC and JETBLUE AIRWAYS CORP have also adjusted their fee structures, while FRONTIER GROUP HOLDINGS INC is currently reviewing its full-year financial guidance.
