Ghana Mineworkers Union Opposes Local Outsourcing Rule
The union warns that mandatory local contracting will reduce wages and job security for 14,000 miners. Workers may strike if the government enforces the policy.
The mineworkers union in Ghana has issued a stern warning against a government policy mandating that international mining firms outsource operations to local contractors. The labor group argues that the transition will lead to significant wage cuts and reduced job security for thousands of workers in the sector.
Abdul Moomin Gbana, president of the union representing approximately 14,000 workers, stated that local contractors often pay lower rates and provide fewer protections than foreign entities. The policy requires major producers, including NEWMONT CORP, ZIJIN MINING GROUP CO LTD-H, and AngloGold Ashanti, to transfer activities such as blasting, loading, and hauling to local firms by December 2026.
