German Private Sector Activity Shrinks in April

The private sector in Germany has entered a period of contraction for the first time in nearly a year, according to the latest flash Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) data. The composite index, which monitors both the services and manufacturing sectors, fell to 48.3 in April from 51.9 in March. This reading missed the expectations of analysts who had predicted the economy would remain in growth territory with a score of 51.2. Any figure below the 50.0 threshold indicates a decline in activity.
