French government remains in office after surviving two no confidence votes over trade deal

The government of Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornus survived two no-confidence motions in the National Assembly on January 14. Both votes were filed in protest of the EU-Mercosur trade deal.

The government of Prime Minister sebastien lecornus successfully withstood two consecutive no-confidence challenges in the National Assembly on January 14, 2026. Both motions, which were filed separately by the far-right National Rally and a hard-left parliamentary faction, were centered on opposition to the EU-Mercosur trade deal. The survival of these votes confirms that the executive remains in place despite a coordinated push from ideologically divergent corners of the legislature in FRFR.
