France has limited fiscal capacity to address the economic pressures caused by the Middle East crisis, according to the head of the country's central bank. François Villeroy de Galhau, Governor of the Bank of France and a policymaker for the European Central Bank, indicated that the nation’s current budget constraints significantly restrict its ability to respond to rising energy costs.

In an interview with the financial news platform Boursorama, Villeroy explained that the government's room for maneuver is currently very narrow. He suggested that any potential fiscal interventions intended to buffer the impact of energy price spikes must be carefully managed to avoid further straining the national budget.

Any government fiscal measures in response to the energy shock should be temporary, targeted and tailored.

The governor's warning comes as geopolitical tensions continue to influence global energy markets, putting pressure on European economies. Villeroy’s stance reflects a broader push for fiscal discipline within the Eurozone, especially for nations already facing tight budgetary conditions.
