EU Sanctions Iranians Over Strait of Hormuz Traffic
The EU sanctioned two Iranians and an IRGC unit for restricting traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. This first use of new powers follows the closure of the oil route.
The European Union sanctioned two Iran individuals and a paramilitary unit on June 8 for disrupting maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. This action marks the first application of the bloc's new legal framework designed to protect global freedom of navigation. The move targets the primary chokepoint for 20% of global oil supply, including shipments of Brent Crude Oil.
### EU Deploys New Maritime Sanctions Power The European Union added the Hormozgan Provincial Command of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy to its sanctions list. Individual penalties were also issued against Mohammad Akbarzadeh, Deputy Commander for Political Affairs of the IRGC Navy, and Hamid Hosseini, a representative of an Iranian energy exporters' union.
