EU Extends Sanctions on Assad Regime and Delists Ministries
The EU renewed sanctions on former Assad officials until June 2027. It also delisted seven entities to support engagement with the new Syrian administration.
The European Council extended sanctions against former Syria officials until June 1, 2027, while delisting seven state entities including the defense and interior ministries. This move follows the May 2025 removal of broader economic sanctions after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad administration. The shift signals Syria's intent to normalize relations and support reconstruction under the current government of Ahmed al-Sharaa.
The European Council announced the decision on Monday, May 18 following an annual review of the Syria sanctions regime. Individuals remaining on the list face asset freezes and travel bans. EU firms are prohibited from providing funds to these designated parties.
