European industry lobby calls for extension of free carbon permits

BusinessEurope, the European Union's top business lobby based in Belgium BEBE, has officially urged the European Commission to reconsider its planned phase-out of free CO2 permits. This announcement comes as the lobby seeks to expand the list of industrial sectors eligible for free allowances, significantly increasing political pressure on the Commission ahead of a major overhaul of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). The request adds to the debate over whether industries should continue to receive protection from pollution costs as the bloc pursues its climate objectives.
