European Electric Car Sales Rise 29 Percent in Q1 2026
European EV sales rose 29 percent in the first quarter as high fuel costs drove demand. March registrations grew over 50 percent in major regional markets.
The European automotive landscape underwent a dramatic transformation in the first quarter of 2026, as sales of fully electric vehicles surged across the continent's primary markets. This trend was largely driven by consumers seeking alternatives to traditional combustion engines following geopolitical instability in Iran, which resulted in the most significant spike in petrol prices and Brent Crude Oil in recent years.
New battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations across 15 major European markets climbed 29.4% year-on-year, reaching nearly 560,000 units. The momentum intensified in March, with sales jumping 51.3% to exceed 240,000 units, according to data from E-Mobility Europe and New Automotive. Last year, these markets represented the vast majority of BEV sales within the European Union and the European Free Trade Association.
