The European Banking Authority (EBA) has initiated a series of measures to significantly simplify supervisory data reporting and reduce the administrative burden for banks across the European Union. This move follows calls from France and Germany for the European Commission to introduce an ambitious simplification package for financial services.

The proposed revisions aim to reduce the number of data points in the harmonized reporting system by approximately 50%. This effort is intended to strengthen proportionality, particularly for small and non-complex institutions, while ensuring that regulators continue to receive the information necessary for oversight.

The revisions also aim to ensure that supervisory authorities continue to receive the information they need to fulfil their supervisory responsibilities, the EBA added.

A public consultation on the revised implementing technical standards for supervisory reporting and benchmarking is open until July 10, 2026. For requirements related to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) 18, the consultation period ends on May 10, 2026. The EBA noted that EU-level reporting is frequently complicated by national requirements and uncoordinated data requests from various public authorities.

To address these challenges, the package includes an overview of national data collection and ongoing simplification efforts. The EBA plans to integrate separate EU-wide stress tests and supervisory benchmarking into regular reporting cycles, which is expected to reduce overlaps and increase consistency. These changes are scheduled to take effect in September 2027. This initiative complements recent efforts by the European Central Bank to simplify approvals for changes to internal credit risk models, aimed at speeding up a process that often delays capital benefits.
