EU trade surplus drops 60 percent on lower US exports
The EU trade surplus fell 60 percent in February as exports to the US dropped 26 percent. Total exports declined 9.3 percent amid shifting tariff policies.
The European Union trade surplus with the rest of the world contracted by 60% in February, as exports to the United States fell by more than 25%. Data from Eurostat shows that overall exports from the bloc were 9.3% lower than the same month last year, while imports decreased by 3.5%. The most significant decline was recorded in shipments to the United States, which dropped by 26.4%, while imports from the country fell by 3.2%. This sharp downturn is partly explained by a high comparison base from February 2025, when exporters front-loaded goods to avoid anticipated tariffs, causing a 22.4% surge in exports at that time.
