EU trade chief expects transitional period with US following new import surcharge

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic says the bloc faces a brief transition after a new US surcharge. Officials aim to resolve the trade dispute by July.

The United States USUS has imposed a temporary 10% import surcharge on all goods not covered by exemptions, effective immediately following a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down the global tariffs previously enacted by Donald Trump. This administrative action, which was announced today, has prompted the European Union EUEU to enter a transitional period in its trade relations with Washington. The surcharge is authorized to remain in place for up to 150 days, establishing a firm deadline of July 24 for both parties to find a diplomatic or legislative solution to the trade friction.
The sudden implementation of the surcharge risks undermining the EU-U.S. trade deal that was successfully reached last year. By potentially superseding the specific tariff terms of that agreement, the new measure could result in the reapplication of most-favoured-nation duties on various imports. This shift threatens to produce higher combined tariff rates on certain products, impacting a wide range of exporters who had previously relied on the stability of the bilateral deal. The European Parliament and the European Parliament trade committee are currently monitoring the situation as they assess the procedural steps necessary to respond to the changing American trade landscape.
