EU proposes sanctions on Georgia and Indonesia ports for handling Russian oil

The EU proposed adding ports in Georgia and Indonesia to its 20th sanctions package today. The move targets facilities involved in handling Russian oil exports.

The European Union diplomatic service, the EEAS, has announced a proposal to add two third-country ports, specifically the Kulevi port (Georgia GEGE) and the Karimun port (Indonesia IDID), to a sanctions package targeting Russia RURU for handling Russian oil. This move marks the first time the EEAS has sought to include ports located in third countries in its measures, representing a significant expansion in the structural scope of the sanctions regime.
As part of the 20th sanctions package, the proposal was put forward to the European Commission and the wider European Union to address sector-level activities related to the transport of oil. By identifying specific facilities like the Kulevi port (Georgia) and the Karimun port (Indonesia), the European Union aims to broaden the reach of its policy regarding the maritime logistics of Russian petroleum. This is the first time such an approach has been taken by the diplomatic service since the inception of the sanctions regime.
