The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reported that African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks in the European Union rose 76% in domestic pigs and 44% in wild boar during 2025. The disease returned to Spain for the first time in over 30 years. The disease is harmless to humans but can be fatal to pigs and wild boar and spreads rapidly, with outbreaks leading to trade bans and movement restrictions.

### Romania and Spain Drive Regional Contagion The bloc recorded 585 outbreaks in domestic pigs in 2025, a 76% increase from the previous year. Romania drove the majority of this growth, accounting for 81% of all domestic pig cases. Croatia, Estonia, and Latvia also reported increases in domestic infections during the period.
