The state-owned power utility in South Africa, Eskom, has finalized a three-year wage agreement that will increase staff salaries by 7% annually starting this July. The utility confirmed that the deal applies to all employees within its wage-bargaining unit, despite one of the three major unions currently refusing to sign the contract. The agreement is legally enforceable because the other participating labor organizations represent a significant majority of the workforce.
The deal is binding because the other two major unions, the National Union of Mineworkers and Solidarity, represent more than 75% of the employees in the Central Bargaining Forum.
