Embraer Eyes India Jet Production by 2028 with 200 Orders

Embraer may start E175 jet assembly in India by 2028 if it secures 200 orders. The firm is also shifting its defense focus to India and the United States.

Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer S.A. could establish a final assembly line for its E175-E1 regional jets in India as early as 2028. According to CEO Francisco Gomes Neto, the initiative is contingent upon the company securing a minimum of 200 aircraft orders. This potential move follows a memorandum of understanding signed earlier this year with the Adani Group to localize production of the first-generation jetliners.

The establishment of a manufacturing base in South Asia would represent a significant shift for the company, which currently produces its commercial aircraft exclusively in Brazil. The plan aligns with the Indian government's ongoing efforts to encourage domestic aerospace manufacturing. However, the CEO emphasized that capital deployment depends entirely on firm commitments from customers.

"Of course, we will not start a significant investment without orders."

If the necessary orders are finalized by the end of 2026, the company anticipates a 24-month setup period, allowing for the first deliveries from the Indian facility in 2028. Embraer S.A. has identified approximately 1,800 routes within the Indian market that are suitable for the E1 series, which seats up to 88 passengers. While demand for these jets has softened in some global markets, they remain a staple of regional aviation in the United States.

Expanding production to the subcontinent would also allow the manufacturer to optimize its existing facilities. By shifting E175 assembly, the company can dedicate its hybrid production lines in South America to the newer E2 family, which is currently experiencing robust global demand. The company has also accelerated its broader delivery targets, now aiming to reach the milestone of 100 commercial aircraft deliveries per year by 2027, one year earlier than previously projected.

Beyond commercial aviation, the company is strengthening its defense ties in the region through a partnership with MAHINDRA & MAHINDRA-SPON GDR regarding the C-390 military cargo jet. While Saudi Arabia was previously considered a primary prospect for the C-390, Gomes Neto indicated that interest from the Middle Eastern nation has cooled as they appear to favor larger aircraft.

"It continues to be a business front, but its not in the hotspot for us right now."

The manufacturer had previously hoped to replace the aging fleet of Lockheed Martin Corporation C-130 aircraft in the Saudi inventory. Despite signing a preliminary agreement with Saudi Arabian Military Industries in 2023, the company is now refocusing its defense marketing efforts on the American and Indian markets.
