ECB Official Patsalides Urges EU Joint Debt Issuance
Cypriot central bank chief Christodoulos Patsalides argued that a common European safe asset would bolster the bloc's sovereignty and lower borrowing costs. He stated that joint debt is necessary to fund digital transitions and defense while strengthening the global role of the euro.
Christodoulos Patsalides of the European Central Bank is urging the issuance of joint European debt to create a large-scale safe asset capable of rivaling United States Treasuries. The proposal addresses the bloc's incomplete financial architecture, which currently results in higher borrowing costs and lower competitiveness compared to global peers. Establishing a common benchmark aims to lower cross-border financing costs and mobilize household savings into productive institutional investments.
