ECB plans to expand liquidity access to more nations to boost global role of euro

The ECB is expanding its liquidity facility to more countries to boost the euro’s global role. New rules will simplify access to repo lines during crises.

The European Central Bank is currently working on a proposal to open its Eurep repurchase-agreement liquidity facility to a broader range of countries, while simultaneously making access to the program cheaper and more standardised. According to sources familiar with the matter, the Governing Council is discussing the changes with the goal of fostering the international role of the euro. Details of the expansion are expected to be announced around the time of the Munich Security Conference next week, marking a significant step in how the central bank provides liquidity to foreign central banks.
The Eurep liquidity facility was designed to allow central banks outside the euro area to borrow euros in exchange for high-quality collateral during periods of financial market stress. At present, the facility is limited to eight neighbouring countries, a group that includes Romania RORO, Hungary HUHU, Albania ALAL, Montenegro MEME, and Serbia RSRS. By expanding this access and standardising the rules for participation, the European Central Bank aims to strengthen the ability of smaller nations to withstand sudden financial pressures and reduce the risk of regional contagion.
