ECB Officials Pledge Vigilance as War Risks Fuel Inflation
ECB officials will act if oil price spikes lead to persistent inflation. They urged vigilance but noted that immediate rate hikes are not currently needed.
European Central Bank policymakers are closely monitoring the economic risks posed by surging oil prices, pledging to take swift action if inflationary pressures become entrenched. As the bank enters its quiet period ahead of the March 19 policy meeting, officials have signaled a preference for cautious analysis while acknowledging the shifting landscape of the Eurozone economy.
The price of oil has increased by nearly 50% since the start of the year, a trend largely attributed to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. This geopolitical instability has led financial markets to anticipate a more aggressive stance from the ECB. Traders are now pricing in 30 to 35 basis points of rate hikes for the current year, a sharp reversal from expectations just two weeks ago when no changes were foreseen.
