Deutsche Bank CEO says lenders are managing Mythos AI risks
Christian Sewing says banks are working with regulators to assess cybersecurity risks from the Mythos AI model. Lenders are now integrating the threat into daily risk management.
Christian Sewing, the Chief Executive Officer of DEUTSCHE BANK AG-REGISTERED, stated on Monday that financial institutions are maintaining close coordination with European regulators regarding Anthropic's new artificial intelligence model, Mythos. The discussions come as watchdogs in Germany and across the continent evaluate the cybersecurity implications of the technology and the industry's readiness to mitigate potential threats.

The Mythos model has drawn significant attention from cybersecurity specialists who argue it presents unique challenges to legacy banking infrastructure. These concerns were highlighted during recent international gatherings in the United States, where policymakers met for the International Monetary Fund spring meetings. Sewing noted that while the situation is being monitored closely, it has not reached a level of crisis.
"Its certainly not something thats causing panic or setting off any alarm bells on our end right now, but its definitely something we need to keep in mind in our day-to-day risk management -- and thats exactly what were doing."
Sewing emphasized that the banking sector is equipped to handle these developments through internal response strategies.
"The banks are prepared for this and have their own responses."
Currently, Anthropic has restricted access to Mythos to a select group of partners under its Project Glasswing initiative and approximately 40 organizations involved in critical software infrastructure. JPMORGAN CHASE & CO remains the only financial institution publicly confirmed to have access to the model. Despite the high demand for the technology, Sewing supported the current restrictive access policy.
"So this is something we have to live with, and of course everyone is trying to gain access, but I also think it’s right that access is limited for now."
The United Kingdom government recently issued a warning via an open letter, noting that assessments by its AI Security Institute found Mythos to be significantly more capable of conducting cyber offenses than previous models. This sentiment was echoed by BARCLAYS PLC CEO C. S. Venkatakrishnan, who described the model as a serious threat to the global financial system.
In Asia, the Financial Supervisory Service of South Korea confirmed it held meetings with security officials to review risks associated with the model. European supervisory sources indicated that while they are not yet overly concerned, they are integrating the assessment of Mythos into existing cyber resilience frameworks.
