Colombia Matches Ecuador With 100 Percent Import Tariffs
Colombia increased tariffs on Ecuador to 100 percent today to match measures by its neighbor. The move follows escalating trade and diplomatic border tensions.
Colombia has announced it will raise tariffs on imports from Ecuador to 100%, a significant increase from the previous 30%. This decision by the Colombian trade ministry follows a reciprocal move by Ecuador just a day earlier, escalating a trade and diplomatic dispute between the two South American nations. Ecuador recently hiked its own tariffs, citing a trade deficit and accusing Colombia of failing to adequately address drug trafficking at their shared border—claims that Colombia has denied while pointing to joint military efforts.
Diplomatic relations have also been strained by comments from Colombian President Gustavo Petro regarding the legal status of Ecuador’s former vice president. Colombian Trade Minister Diana Morales stated that Ecuador’s decision to increase tariffs from 50% to 100% left Colombia with no choice but to align its own trade policy.
