Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland President Beth Hammack stated on Friday that she sees no immediate requirement to adjust monetary policy, citing inflation levels that remain stubbornly high. During a presentation in the United States at the U.S. Monetary Policy Forum in New York City, Hammack explained that the central bank must navigate a delicate balance between persistent price pressures and a cooling labor market. Hammack suggested that the rate reductions implemented last year have placed the federal funds target range, currently between 3.5% and 3.75%, in a neutral position. She indicated that this stance allows the Fed to observe economic developments without the immediate pressure to act. > "Under my base case, I think policy should be on hold for quite some time as we see evidence that inflation is coming down and the labor market stabilizes further." The Cleveland Fed leader, who holds a vote on the Federal Open Market Committee this year, acknowledged that risks to the interest rate path are now two-sided. External factors, including geopolitical tensions following recent escalations involving Iran, have contributed to higher energy costs and renewed concerns regarding long-term inflation. Hammack noted that businesses are also facing rising expenses for electricity and health insurance, alongside uncertainties regarding trade tariffs. Regarding the international standing of the dollar, Hammack dismissed the idea of an imminent shift in its status as the primary global reserve currency. She attributed the dollar's strength to the robust nature of American legal and institutional frameworks. > "One reason is that the more people use a currency, the stronger the network effects and the bigger the benefits." The official also pointed to the emergence of stablecoins as a potential factor that could increase demand for the dollar, as these digital assets are typically denominated in the U.S. currency. She concluded that the lack of viable alternatives makes a retreat from dollar holdings unlikely in the near term.
