Cigna Ends GLP-1 Weight Loss Coverage for Employees
Health insurer Cigna will stop covering weight-loss medications like Wegovy and Zepbound for its employees starting July 1. The company plans to offer coverage for older generic alternatives while encouraging staff to use cash-pay options for newer GLP-1 treatments.
Cigna will terminate coverage of GLP-1 weight-loss medications for its 67,700 employees effective July 1. This policy shift removes access to high-cost treatments like Wegovy and Zepbound for a workforce primarily based in the United States. The move signals a tightening of corporate pharmacy benefits as employers struggle to manage the costs of high-demand obesity treatments.
### Cigna Pivots to Lower-Cost Alternatives Cigna informed staff in an email on June 1 that the Cigna Group Medical Plan will no longer cover drugs like Wegovy or Zepbound for weight management. A Cigna spokesperson confirmed the change, citing increased availability of new options as the primary reason for the shift. Cigna will continue to cover these medications for type 2 diabetes and for clients outside its own employee plan.
