Chinese ship captain wan wenguo appeared in court on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, to face criminal charges related to the damage of critical undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. The 43-year-old captain of the Hong Kong-registered container ship NewNew Polar Bear is accused of damaging undersea cables and a natural gas pipeline on October 8, 2023. During the hearing, his lawyer jerry chung announced that 18 witnesses would be called to testify in the criminal damage case.
