Chinese bank lending surges in January yet falls short of market expectations

New bank lending in China jumped to 4.71 trillion yuan in January but fell short of analyst targets. Weak credit demand continues to weigh on the economy.

The People's Bank of China reported today that Chinese banks extended 4.71 trillion yuan in new yuan loans in January. While this figure represents a sharp monthly increase from the 910 billion yuan recorded in December, it fell below analyst forecasts and the record level seen in the same month last year. The data, marking the first monthly credit print of 2026, highlights a period when lenders in China CNCN typically front-load their lending activity to secure market share and support early-year projects.
