China threatens French wine industry over proposed EU trade measures
Beijing warned today it may target French wine if Paris continues pushing for steep EU tariffs on Chinese goods. State media called the proposal a trade war.
China
CN has warned it could investigate wines from France
FR or impose reciprocal tariffs on relevant products from the European Union in response to a French government (strategy report). This report, published on Monday, urged the bloc to consider an unprecedented 30% across-the-board tariff on Chinese goods or a 30% depreciation of the euro against the renminbi. This policy-driven development has immediately escalated trade tensions and raised significant questions regarding compliance with the World Trade Organization.
The warning was issued immediately after the French government (strategy report) was released. The proposal for a 30% tariff is noted for its unusually large scale and the fact that it specifically targets only Chinese products. Such measures, according to the Chinese side, could lead to direct countermeasures affecting the French wine sector and other European exports.
