China saw its exports of rare earths climb by 23% during the first two months of 2026 compared to the previous year, according to data released on Tuesday. The General Administration of Customs noted that the world's leading producer of these minerals exported a total of 10,468.3 metric tons in January and February. This combined reporting period is used to mitigate the impact of the Lunar New Year holiday on trade statistics. The increase follows a strong performance in 2025, when exports reached their highest levels in over a decade. This growth occurred even as Beijing began implementing restrictions on the shipment of several medium-to-heavy elements in April of last year. The sector's strategic significance was underscored by a recent visit from Premier Li Qiang to rare earth facilities in Jiangxi province. During the inspection, the Premier alluded to the growing competition with the United States over the control of strategic mineral resources. The evolving regulatory environment in the region is a key focus for international players such as LYNAS RARE EARTHS LTD. To address these developments, a Chinese metals industry body is set to hold a policy briefing in Beijing on March 25. The session will cover the export of rare earths and other critical minerals as the government intensifies its oversight of strategic materials and dual-use goods.
