China Oil Production Hits Record but Faces Looming Plateau
China reached record oil output of 4.32 million barrels per day but experts say production is hitting economic limits. Output is expected to plateau by 2030.
China, the world's leading oil importer, has reached a critical juncture in its seven-year effort to maximize domestic production. After achieving a record high of 4.32 million barrels per day (bpd) last year through intensive drilling in mature fields and an offshore surge, the nation is approaching the economic and technical limits of its output capacity.
Industry experts anticipate that production will plateau just below last year's record for the next decade. This level is viewed as a vital national security baseline, necessary to sustain basic manufacturing and military operations. The government’s 2026-2030 energy plan aligns with this view, targeting a consistent output of 4 million bpd.
