Banks in China extended 900 billion yuan ($130 billion) in new yuan loans in February, a sharp decline from the 4.71 trillion yuan issued in January. This figure fell short of market expectations, as analysts polled by Reuters had anticipated new lending to reach approximately 979 billion yuan for the month.

The calculations, based on data released by the People's Bank of China (PBOC), highlight a significant seasonal slowdown following the record-breaking lending surge seen at the start of the year. The PBOC typically does not provide monthly breakdowns, requiring calculations based on cumulative data from January and February.

In terms of broader credit trends, outstanding yuan loans grew by 6.0% in February from a year earlier. This represents a slight deceleration from the 6.1% growth rate recorded in January, though it aligned with analyst forecasts. The lending environment remains a key indicator of economic activity as the nation navigates its recovery path.

The exchange rate used for these calculations was approximately 6.8999 yuan per dollar, a level closely monitored by traders of the US Dollar / Chinese Yuan (Offshore).
