The manufacturing sector in Canada reached a point of stagnation in March, as a combination of trade pressures and geopolitical instability weighed on industrial output. The S&P Global Canada Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) retreated to 50.0 last month from 51.0 in February, marking its lowest point in three months. A reading of 50.0 indicates no growth, separating expansion from contraction.

Trade relations with the United States remain a primary concern for domestic producers. Tariffs on critical exports, including steel, aluminum, and automotive parts, have hampered the flow of goods and reduced new order volumes. The index for new orders fell to 48.7, while the output measure dipped into contraction territory at 49.6.
