Brazil central bank policy board faces persistent vacancies

Brazil's central bank will set interest rates this week with two vacant board seats. Political delays and a corruption probe may keep the roles open for months.

The central bank of Brazil is scheduled to make its next interest rate decision this week while operating with two vacant seats on its monetary policy committee. These vacancies are expected to remain open for several more months due to ongoing tensions between the government and Senate leaders. A committee review and a plenary vote are required for any nominee to take office, leaving only seven of the nine seats occupied as the bank prepares to potentially start a rate-cutting cycle.

Sources familiar with the matter indicate that filling these positions has not been treated as a priority by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, even after Finance Minister Fernando Haddad suggested candidates last month. The delay is further complicated by a federal police investigation into Banco Master, a failed lender involved in a widening corruption scandal. Senate confirmation hearings are unlikely to move forward until the investigation into the bank's fraudulent loan portfolios is resolved.
