German politician Christian Schmidt will resign as the international peace overseer for Bosnia and Herzegovina for personal reasons, his office announced on Monday. Appointed in 2021, Schmidt managed the implementation of the Dayton peace accords that ended the 1992-1995 war. His departure follows years of political stalemate and a dispute over a 1.5-billion-euro ($1.77-billion) gas pipeline project backed by the United States.
