Bank of Korea Minutes Show Caution Over War Risks
The Bank of Korea maintains a wait and see approach as geopolitical tensions in Iran impact growth and inflation. Board members are now prioritizing price stability.
The monetary policy board of South Korea has signaled a cautious, wait-and-see stance regarding its interest rate trajectory, citing significant global uncertainties. According to minutes released from the latest policy meeting, officials are closely monitoring the geopolitical fallout from the conflict involving Iran and its potential impact on domestic growth and inflation.
During the session held on April 10, the board voted unanimously to maintain the benchmark interest rate at 2.50%. This decision aligned with market expectations, as all 31 economists surveyed by Reuters had predicted a hold. The central bank remains in a difficult position, balancing the need to support economic growth against the risk of an energy-driven inflationary shock.
