Bank of England official Catherine Mann welcomes inflation drop but warns on underlying trends

Bank of England interest-rate setter Catherine Mann said on Thursday that while recent headline British inflation data looked 'good', underlying measures have not improved as much as the central bank expected. Speaking as a sitting rate setter, Mann noted that this gap makes it harder to judge whether a near-term move to 2% inflation would represent a sustainable underlying trend for the United Kingdom GBGB.
The remarks, which served as a timely reaction to this week's inflation data, were made during an appearance on the Kathleen Hays Presents: Central Bank Central (podcast). Mann explained that while the headline figures were positive, the lack of expected progress in underlying inflation figures complicates the Bank of England's assessment of long-term price stability.
