Balkan Groups Oppose US Gas Projects for Renewables
Activists from 47 organizations are urging Western Balkan governments to reject US gas infrastructure in favor of renewable energy to align with EU standards.
Environmental activists across the Western Balkans are mounting a coordinated effort to steer regional energy policy away from fossil fuel infrastructure backed by the United States. A coalition of 47 non-governmental organizations issued a joint statement on Monday, urging governments to prioritize renewable energy over new projects involving Natural Gas.
This pushback comes as the European Union moves toward a total ban on imports from Russia by 2028. In response, American interests have sought to increase the flow of West Texas Oil and Brent Crude Oil into the region to reduce its historical dependence on Russian energy supplies. However, activists argue that long-term investments in gas pipelines will fail to pay off and will negatively impact the global climate.
